Recently, we caught up with Pradeep to gain insights on social media as the new face of communication and how it can contribute to development sector.

[Edited Excerpts]

OpportuneJobs.com: Social Media Marketing (SMM) as the new face of communication. Do you agree?

Pradeep:
I fully agree but I would replace Social Media Marketing with Social Media here. Fundamentally, Social Media is a medium of communication. Given there are over 1.3 billion users on this medium and engaging nature of this medium, it's one of the best mediums to communicate with any kind of target audience including prospects, clients, employees, partners, investors, analysts, friends and family members.

At the same, given most of the communication on Social Media medium is public and real time, it requires caution and skills to effectively leverage this medium.

OpportuneJobs.com: How Social Media can contribute to development sector?

Pradeep: Social Media is one of the best mediums for professionals and organizations in development sector to fulfill multiple business objectives ranging from hiring, employee engagement, fund raising, market research, knowledge management, branding, customer service and customer acquisition. Users on Social Media including influencers are more likely to engage and support social causes compared to professional campaigns. A number of NGOs such as
CRY, Rang De have leveraged Social Media to reach out to their target audience and accomplish various business goals.

OpportuneJobs.com: What are the top 3 social media channels to be on?

Pradeep: While it really depends upon the target audience & business objectives,
Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are likely to be top Social Media channels for majority of the business because of their reach. If you'd not put a limit of 3, I would have liked to add YouTube as well.

OpportuneJobs.com: Any advice for service industry and product development industry?

Pradeep: Identify Social Media objectives based on your Marketing objectives and accordingly identify & segment your target audience. Based on that identify relevant Social Media channels and respective Content, Engagement and may be advertising strategy. It's important to define key metrics and relevant tools to measure and continuously improve performance.

OpportuneJobs.com: Any advice you have for professionals looking for careers in Social Media?

Pradeep: In my view, it's one of the best times to be part of this ever growing industry. I am reminded of the times when IT was at its peak. The wave is so high today that anyone who enters this industry today is likely to build a rewarding career. Considering the evolution of this medium, I recommend that one should consider acquiring relevant skills and experience across Digital Media vs just Social Media. If someone is really serious to exploit this opportunity, do consider joining our
Digital Marketing certification programs. :)
